This news has been known for a while. And it isn't exactly novel since Benedict XVI already entered the world of microblogging last year. This time, however, his presence there will be fixed with a personalized account - @pontifex, in English and seven other languages, Arabic included – and the date of the first tweet:: Wednesday, 12 December, coinciding with the General Audience. And to symbolize the importance attributed by the people of Twitter (500 million people around the world, 40 percent of whom are between the ages of 18 and 40) a press agency announced the registration of 40,000 followers just 20 minutes after the Pope's account was made known.
The intentions, technical data and historical references were presented Monday morning, 3 December, during a press conference. The intentions above all and these Archbishop Celli explained. Underlining an particular characteristic of Benedict's personality he stressed the Pope's great desire to encounter men and women wherever they are and begin dialogue with them. A dialogue carried out within the frame of 140 characters, but perfectly formed in the style of biblical verses, to testify that the meaning of a message can be captured in few words. Everything depends, he said, on the substance of the one who is sending a message and on that of the one receiving it. In this sense, concluded the Archbishop, the words of the Pope will be “pearls of wisdom”.
