Presentation of the Programme

of Celebrations of the 50th Anniversary

of the Canonisation of Saint Vincent Pallotti

On May 16 last, at the meeting of the three General Councils of the Core Communities and the President of the General Coordination Council of the Union of Catholic Apostolate, the Committee “The Pallottine Family Celebrates” was instituted with the task of drawing up a common programme which would take account of local initiatives, in order to coordinate the particular celebrations in Rome, in the Spiritual Centre of the Union, SS. Salvatore in Onda” ». [1]

Furthermore, during the meeting it was decided that the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Canonisation “will begin on January 20 2012 and finish on January 20 2013, with the possibility of allowing for other initiatives of the Pallottine Family up to January 20 2014, with a view to spiritual and apostolic renewal”.[2]

In line with the indications received, the Committee has developed a programme of initiatives for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Canonisation which were approved during the meeting of the three Superiors General of the Core Communities on October 8 last.

As a starting point for its work, the Committee took the numerous suggestions submitted from many places, the majority being achievable within the time agreed for the celebrations and during 2013.

“Holiness” in St. Vincent Pallotti was chosen as a general theme for the year in order to enter more deeply into his spiritual experience and bring about the hoped-for spiritual and apostolic renewal in the life of the entire Union of Catholic Apostolate.

Celebrating the feast of 50 years since the canonisation of St. Vincent Pallotti stirs in the heart of each and every one of us the desire to enter into our hearts and recognise in it the dwelling place of God. It is a desire which moves our hearts, then, to ask ourselves what the root, the heart of his holiness, of every holiness, of our holiness, might be. But what is the answer? Living the Gospel life and experience fully, just like Saint Vincent did during his earthly existence. He was declared a saint because he lived love fully, he knew how to love and follow Christ in daily life; and from him we understand that it is possible for all to follow this path.

For this reason, the whole life of the Union should converge towards this ‘tempo forte’, this ‘special time of grace’, and the initiatives which will take place will be the instrument through which this spiritual and apostolic renewal can be achieved in order that we may be faithful to the charism which Saint Vincent left us.

In keeping with these proposals, the Committee has drawn up a programme which includes:

  1. specific events to take place in Rome and in SS. Salvatore in Onda, the Spiritual Centre of the Union;
  2. the programme of local initiatives already organised and the proposals to be disseminated in order to express a single identity and a common way of living this 50th anniversary.
